Steffi Graf’s footwork

For those of you too young to remember, Steffi Graf is arguably the best female tennis player of all time. In total she won 22 grand slam titles and 109 tournaments overall. She’s the only person, male or female, to win all four major tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open) more than four times and in 1988, was the last person to win the grand slam, and the only tennis player in history to win the “golden grand slam” which refers to winning all four major titles in one calendar year in addition to the Olympic gold medal. She was ranked the #1 player in the world a record 377 weeks, 156 of those consecutively, also a record. She introduced the power-game to women’s tennis and unlike the players of today, never grunted. She was gracious in defeat and always let the tennis racquet do the talking. In 1999, at the age of 30, and after years of injuries, she retired ranked #3 in the world, the highest of any player. I patterned a lot of my own tennis game off of Steffi’s all-encompassing court coverage, and in this video above you can see how at 42-years-old, her footwork is still second to none.

Parques Tres de Febrero a.k.a. Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods)

Bosques de Palermo

Bosques de Palermo

As an avid runner what better place is there to hit the pavement than Parque Tres de Febrero — also known as Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods) — in the Buenos Aires barrio of Palermo? Okay the answer to this question is obviously rhetorical, because there is no better place.

Summer in Argentina is humid, unlike anything this Canadian has ever experienced, and I have to be more cautious running outside in the scorching temperatures. I rose early this morning before it got too hot and made my way over to the park for a run.

Known for its groves, lakes and famous Rose Garden, Parque Tres de Febrero is insanely busy on the weekends, and virtually dead during the weekdays. However, it was more bearable this morning than usual as Porteños escape the city during the summer weekends for greener pastures.

You can spend hours just sitting and people watching, and for a gay man, there’s plenty of eye candy.

Bosques de Palermo is a city park of 62 acres with boat rides available on three artificial lakes. For now though, I’ve only explored the park on foot.

Well, here are some of the photos I took.

Friends For Life Bike Rally

My bike

My hybrid bike. I had the cheapest bike of all the cyclists but I love it still!

My trip down memory lane continues. In 2009 I participated in the Friends For Life Bike Rally in support of the People With AIDS (PWA) Foundation. Over 300 people cycled for six days and over 600 KM from Toronto to Montreal. In addition I raised over $2,300 for the PWA. I am still very proud of this accomplishment.

2011 Pride and Remembrance Run

For five consecutive years I have participated in the Pride and Remembrance 5KM Run during pride week in Toronto. This year Lisa and Keith joined me in the adventure and I found these pictures which are very nice. All proceeds raised for the run go to charities that support the prevention and management of HIV and AIDS. It’s a lot of fun and I’m glad that this year I had company.

Not a Jays fan

Jays

I never watch baseball. True story.

I went for a long walk today and a Canadian tourist stopped me and asked where I got my t-shirt. I said Canada, Urban Outfitters to be exact. She expressed some admiration for the Blue Jays and I admitted to never having followed baseball all that seriously. She gave me a strange look. I felt like a fraud. But I carried on with my pride intact.

Maude and me after I picked up my bib.

I’m embarrassed by my time, but in reality it’s not that bad. I finished the race in 49 minutes and 43 seconds.

Not my personal best, but it’s something. Out of 820 runners in my age category, I placed 316. Out of 5,217 males, I placed 1,992.

I’m calling this a success!

Now it’s over and I will reward myself with beer.
