My broken retina
So about two months ago I was walking in the rain when my umbrella snapped in the wind, hit the floor, then popped back up and poked me in the right eye. I’m not going to lie to you, it hurt. My vision was fine, so I didn’t think much more about it. Since then every now and again, when I’m tired, the same eye becomes sore, or tender to touch. Early last week I thought that I better do something about it by scheduling an appointment with the optometrist but, predictably I kept forgetting. I forget. All the time. Yesterday I discovered that I put the peanut butter jar in the refrigerator. Do I have dementia?
To make a long story even longer, last night I went to scratch my eye lid but inadvertently scratched my eye-ball instead! It might have had something to do with that third glass of white wine. I noticed that my vision was a little blurred so I walked to St. Michael’s Hospital just to be on the safe side, but as I sat waiting to see a doctor my vision returned to normal, so I walked back home.
This morning I went to see the optometrist and it turns out that I have a tiny break in my retina. I may need surgery to repair it, but that won’t be for another couple of weeks. In the meantime if I experience any symptoms of retina detachment, such as floaters, flashes, or dimness in vision, I am to go to the emergency room.
The optometrist assured me that the break is very small and that she isn’t concerned about it. The good news is that my vision appears to be repairing itself in both eyes. It’s not impossible for this to happen, but I now have a much lighter prescription. In one year I have gone from -7.50 to -6.00. I purchased a new pair of Gucci eye glasses today, and they will be ready in one week. I have determined that from now on I will be wearing glasses instead of contacts, so that if an umbrella decides to attack me again, I’ll be prepared.
So that was my day. How was yours?
