Nina Simone
I cannot properly articulate Nina Simone’s talent. She died at the age of 70 in 2003 but she’s left an enduring legacy with my soul. She grew up wanting to be a classical pianist but because of segregation laws, couldn’t get accepted to any school programs. She was heavily involved in the civil rights movement and in later years renounced her American citizenship and moved to Africa, eventually settling in France where she spent her remaining years.
Simone first came to my attention in the last scene from the movie Before Sunset, when Julie Delpy’s character discusses her passing and imitates her performance style.
I will never fully understand why our society refuses to acknowledge true musicianship and instead focus on cheap theatrics made popular by the likes of Madonna, Katy Perry and Lady GaGa. Nina Simone let the music stand, and her talent, her voice, were undeniable.
Anyway, here is the documentary, Nina Simone: The Legend, chronicling Simone’s life that I think everyone should watch. Thank you and good night!
